What should you do when you receive an IRS notice?
First, do not ignore it. Every IRS notice has a deadline, and the deadlines drive every option you have. Identify the notice number (top right of the letter, e.g., CP2000, CP14, LT11) and the response date. Keep the envelope.
A CP2000 is a notice of proposed underreported income, typically triggered by a mismatch between W-2/1099 forms and your filed return. You have 30 days to agree, partially agree, or disagree with the proposed change. Disagreeing in writing with documentation often resolves it without further action.
A CP14 is a balance-due notice and starts the collection clock. A CP504 is a final notice before levy. An LT11 (or Letter 1058) is a final notice of intent to levy and your right to a Collection Due Process hearing. Each of these has different rights and timelines.
