Form 1040-X
Amended US Individual Income Tax Return
The federal form used to correct a previously filed individual income tax return, claiming additional refunds or reporting additional tax owed.
Who Files Form 1040-X
Any individual taxpayer who needs to correct a previously filed Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR. Common reasons: missed deductions or credits, incorrect filing status, math errors not auto-corrected by the IRS, additional income discovered after filing, or basis corrections on capital gain reporting.
What Form 1040-X Reports
Form 1040-X reports the original return as filed (Column A), the changes (Column B), and the corrected amounts (Column C), with a written explanation of each change. Refunds from amended returns can be tracked at the IRS Where's My Amended Return tool. The IRS accepts e-filed 1040-X for tax years 2019 and forward.
Key Deadlines
- Three years from the date the original return was filed (or two years from the date the tax was paid, whichever is later)
- For refund claims, the three-year statute is strictly enforced and missed returns generally cannot be amended for refund
Common Mistakes
- Filing Form 1040-X before the original return is fully processed (which causes it to be rejected)
- Forgetting to file an amended state return when the federal change affects state tax
- Missing the three-year refund statute of limitations
- Not attaching supporting schedules and forms that changed (Schedule A, Schedule C, Form 8949, etc.)
Best Practices
- Wait until the original return is fully processed before filing 1040-X. Submitting too early causes the amended return to be rejected.
- File state amended returns alongside the federal one if the federal change affects state tax. State statutes of limitations are often shorter than federal.
- Use IRS Where Is My Amended Return tool to track status. Processing typically takes 8 to 12 weeks but can stretch to 16 weeks during peak season.
- Attach copies of any new schedules and forms (Schedule A, Schedule C, Form 8949) that changed. The IRS rejects 1040-X without supporting attachments.
- Include a clear written explanation in Part III. Vague reasons like "math error" or "missed deduction" can trigger correspondence audits.
